In this ask an employer Q&A - we have asked one of the employers we have worked with to answer some frequently asked questions from people considering doing an apprenticeship. This section may answer questions you may have or employers.

1. Why should I do an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are an effective route to take because it helps you enhance your skills in a classroom setting and they also provide you with a nationally recognised qualification. You gain on the job experience in an area or sector of your choosing. This is a unique opportunity to be able to experience a combination of both practical and academic work to get into a career of your choice.

2. What qualification will I receive from an apprenticeship?

The grade you receive on your apprenticeship is dependent on the apprenticeship you choose. There are currently four different apprenticeships available which are explained below:

  • Intermediate Apprenticeship – Intermediate apprenticeship are a level 2 programme which is equivalent to 5 GCSE passes.
  • Advanced Apprenticeships – Advanced apprenticeships are a level 3 programme that are equivalent to 2 passes at A-Level.
  • Higher Apprenticeships – Higher apprenticeships are a level 4 programme that is equivalent to a foundation degree.
  • Degree Apprenticeship – Degree apprenticeships are a level 6 or 7 programme. This is the equivalent of bachelors or master’s degree

3. What are the pros and cons of doing an apprenticeship?

  • Debt free
  • You get certified – gaining a nationally recognised qualification
  • There are many opportunities for various sectors to work within


  • Miss out on university experience
  • Won’t be able to access all careers
  • Shorter holidays with annual leave instead of term time holidays

4. What skills can you gain?

Working as an apprentice means you have the advantage of gaining experience and integrating into a business environment rather than being more familiar with a classroom setting. Functioning within a workplace will allow individuals to build and enhance many skills including, confidence, team-working, communication, time management, organisation and much more.

5. Why should you do an apprenticeship rather than go to college?

Young people apply for an apprenticeship over college because it enables them to gain experience in their chosen field, alongside an academic qualification. You may also find that many employers will go on to employ their apprentices as they become competent and familiar with the workplace.

6. In the duration of your apprenticeship what is the ratio for practical work and classroom-based learning?

The typical ratio for on-the-job experience and classroom-based learning is 80/20, respectively.
